ELECTION '08: What Do Kenyans Expect From Obama?

I am curious. I know that Barack Obama’s father is a Luo, a tribe in Kenya which has been in the fore front of opposition in the seeming Kikuyu/Kalenjin political hegemony. I may be wrong there. I also know that Ralia Odinga – that name again – is a Luo. But more than tribe and tongue, I am curious as to how Kenyans feel – no, not “feel”, but what Kenyans expect from an Obama presidency besides the natural “high” of having one’s own in the world’s most powerful office.

I know how I felt about even the regular mentioning of Cardinal Arinze’s name in connection with the Papacy in the spring of 2005. I was in Kenya at the time, so my pride was even bigger; my head more swollen every time someone said: “Hey Nigerian, how do you feel about your countryman becoming the Pope.” I did not know what else to feel but pride since I am not catholic and do not even believe in the slightest that Pope Arinze would be any less conservative than many of his predecessors. Even if I did, I still am not catholic and thus may not think much of the Pope. But still, I did cherish the thought of the possibility. It was a gripping collective disappointment then that greeted the final denouement when we realized that the world was after all not ready for a Black Pope.

It is usually the same support that we give to our footballers when they play at the world stage. As soon as individual African teams crash out of such tournaments (take the Olympics, or the World Cup, for instance), their supporters at home switch support to the remaining African teams in the tournament and cheer them to victory. Nigeria won the first Olympic soccer gold followed by Cameroon four years later in that fashion. That however is sports. The gold adorns our sport monuments and corridors of power and the name of our country enters records. In politics however, things are not the same. They are not even what they seem. A Nigerian in Hollywood is still a Hollywood, not Nigerian, actor. (ask Chinwetel Ejiofor of The Inside Man, Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje of Lost and The Mummy Returns, and Sophie Okonedo of The Jackal and Hotel Rwanda; and Seal, Nas and Sade Adu, to mention a few.)

ELECTION '08: What Do Kenyans Expect From Obama?

But perhaps I should ask my Nigerian countrymen the same question as well. Nigeria’s Stock Exchange director is in a big mess at the present, for daring to raise money for the Obama campaign from Nigeria. (Refer to story) In a country of poverty and unemployment, Mrs. Ndi Okereke Onyiuke managed to raise a whopping $840,000 (£420,000) in one dinner party that had guests paying up to $21,000 for a “corporate” table, and $2,754 for individuals. She says: “Our aim was to encourage those people to tell their family who have the right to vote in America to vote for Obama… through advertisements aimed at persuading Nigerians to tell their relatives in America to register to vote.”

The question again, then, is the same: More than the expected pride in the final connection with the West, what do we expect from President Obama of the United States? Kenyans first.

Obama’s brother is living in squallor and Obama still does not help lift him from dire poverty when Obama is so filthy rich???
You call that a humanitarian or a decent human being??
I would spit in Obama’s face if given the opportunity... He is such an egomaniac who cares for no one but himself!

John,

You are clearly full of hate for Barack Obama and if that makes you sleep happy, so be it.

This crap about his brother living in squalor has been dismissed by no less than the supposed ’wretched’ fellow himself. He is living is life the best he can and has made it clear to Vanity Fair (his supposed discoverers) and CNN (and will probably repeat it to you if you care to visit him) that he is not suffering and is not asking for anything from Barack.

The likes of you can spit buckets if you wish but are not doing him a favor. Spitting in Obama’s face certainly doesn’t make you decent.

Hi John,

Do not spit yet. For all we know, the talk of the presence of a poor sibling is unfounded. Do you have sources?

How Barack Obama learned to love Israel
Ali Abunimah, The Electronic Intifada, 4 March 2007

(EI Illustration)

I first met Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama almost ten years ago when, as my representative in the Illinois state senate, he came to speak at the University of Chicago. He impressed me as progressive, intelligent and charismatic. I distinctly remember thinking ’if only a man of this calibre could become president one day.’

On Friday Obama gave a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Chicago. It had been much anticipated in American Jewish political circles which buzzed about his intensive efforts to woo wealthy pro-Israel campaign donors who up to now have generally leaned towards his main rival Senator Hillary Clinton.

Reviewing the speech, Ha’aretz Washington correspondent Shmuel Rosner concluded that Obama ”sounded as strong as Clinton, as supportive as Bush, as friendly as Giuliani. At least rhetorically, Obama passed any test anyone might have wanted him to pass. So, he is pro-Israel. Period.”

Israel is ”our strongest ally in the region and its only established democracy,” Obama said, assuring his audience that ”we must preserve our total commitment to our unique defense relationship with Israel by fully funding military assistance and continuing work on the Arrow and related missile defense programs.” Such advanced multi-billion dollar systems he asserted, would help Israel ”deter missile attacks from as far as Tehran and as close as Gaza.” As if the starved, besieged and traumatized population of Gaza are about to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Obama offered not a single word of criticism of Israel, of its relentless settlement and wall construction, of the closures that make life unlivable for millions of Palestinians.

There was no comfort for the hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza who live in the dark, or the patients who cannot get dialysis, because of what Israeli human rights group B’Tselem termed ”one cold, calculated decision, made by Israel’s prime minister, defense minister, and IDF chief of staff” last summer to bomb the only power plant in Gaza,” a decision that ”had nothing to do with the attempts to achieve [the] release [of a captured soldier] nor any other military need.” It was a gratuitous war crime, one of many condemned by human rights organizations, against an occupied civilian population who under the Fourth Geneva Convention Israel is obligated to protect.

While constantly emphasizing his concern about the threat Israelis face from Palestinians, Obama said nothing about the exponentially more lethal threat Israelis present to Palestinians. In 2006, according to B’Tselem, Israeli occupation forces killed 660 Palestinians of whom 141 were children — triple the death toll for 2005. In the same period, 23 Israelis were killed by Palestinians, half the number of 2005 (by contrast, 500 Israelis die each year in road accidents).

But Obama was not entirely insensitive to ordinary lives. He recalled a January 2006 visit to the Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona that resembled an ordinary American suburb where he could imagine the sounds of Israeli children at ”joyful play just like my own daughters.” He saw a home the Israelis told him was damaged by a Hizbullah rocket (no one had been hurt in the incident).

Six months later, Obama said, ”Hizbullah launched four thousand rocket attacks just like the one that destroyed the home in Kiryat Shmona, and kidnapped Israeli service members.”

Obama’s phrasing suggests that Hizbullah launched thousands of rockets in an unprovoked attack, but it’s a complete distortion. Throughout his speech he showed a worrying propensity to present discredited propaganda as fact. As anyone who checks the chronology of last summer’s Lebanon war will easily discover, Hizbullah only launched lethal barrages of rockets against Israeli towns and cities after Israel had heavily bombed civilian neighborhoods in Lebanon killing hundreds of civilians, many fleeing the Israeli onslaught.

Obama excoriated Hizbullah for using ”innocent people as shields.” Indeed, after dozens of civilians were massacred in an Israeli air attack on Qana on July 30, Israel ”initially claimed that the military targeted the house because Hezbollah fighters had fired rockets from the area,” according to an August 2 statement from Human Rights Watch.

The statement added: ”Human Rights Watch researchers who visited Qana on July 31, the day after the attack, did not find any destroyed military equipment in or near the home. Similarly, none of the dozens of international journalists, rescue workers and international observers who visited Qana on July 30 and 31 reported seeing any evidence of Hezbollah military presence in or around the home. Rescue workers recovered no bodies of apparent Hezbollah fighters from inside or near the building.” The Israelis subsequently changed their story, and neither in Qana, nor anywhere else did Israel ever present, or international investigators ever find evidence to support the claim Hizbullah had a policy of using civilians as human shields.

In total, forty-three Israeli civilians were killed by Hizbullah rockets during the thirty-four day war. For every Israeli civilian who died, over twenty-five Lebanese civilians were killed by indiscriminate Israeli bombing — over one thousand in total, a third of them children. Even the Bush administration recently criticized Israel’s use of cluster bombs against Lebanese civilians. But Obama defended Israel’s assault on Lebanon as an exercise of its ”legitimate right to defend itself.”

There was absolutely nothing in Obama’s speech that deviated from the hardline consensus underpinning US policy in the region. Echoing the sort of exaggeration and alarmism that got the United States into the Iraq war, he called Iran ”one of the greatest threats to the United States, to Israel, and world peace.” While advocating ”tough” diplomacy with Iran he confirmed that ”we should take no option, including military action, off the table.” He opposed a Palestinian unity government between Hamas and Fatah and insisted ”we must maintain the isolation of Hamas” until it meets the Quartet’s one-sided conditions. He said Hizbullah, which represents millions of Lebanon’s disenfranchised and excluded, ”threatened the fledgling movement for democracy” and blamed it for ”engulf[ing] that entire nation in violence and conflict.”

Over the years since I first saw Obama speak I met him about half a dozen times, often at Palestinian and Arab-American community events in Chicago including a May 1998 community fundraiser at which Edward Said was the keynote speaker. In 2000, when Obama unsuccessfully ran for Congress I heard him speak at a campaign fundraiser hosted by a University of Chicago professor. On that occasion and others Obama was forthright in his criticism of US policy and his call for an even-handed approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The last time I spoke to Obama was in the winter of 2004 at a gathering in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. He was in the midst of a primary campaign to secure the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate seat he now occupies. But at that time polls showed him trailing.

As he came in from the cold and took off his coat, I went up to greet him. He responded warmly, and volunteered, ”Hey, I’m sorry I haven’t said more about Palestine right now, but we are in a tough primary race. I’m hoping when things calm down I can be more up front.” He referred to my activism, including columns I was contributing to the The Chicago Tribune critical of Israeli and US policy, ”Keep up the good work!”

But Obama’s gradual shift into the AIPAC camp had begun as early as 2002 as he planned his move from small time Illinois politics to the national scene. In 2003, Forward reported on how he had ”been courting the pro-Israel constituency.” He co-sponsored an amendment to the Illinois Pension Code allowing the state of Illinois to lend money to the Israeli government. Among his early backers was Penny Pritzker — now his national campaign finance chair — scion of the liberal but staunchly Zionist family that owns the Hyatt hotel chain. (The Hyatt Regency hotel on Mount Scopus was built on land forcibly expropriated from Palestinian owners after Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967). He has also appointed several prominent pro-Israel advisors.

Obama has also been close to some prominent Arab Americans, and has received their best advice. His decisive trajectory reinforces a lesson that politically weak constituencies have learned many times: access to people with power alone does not translate into influence over policy. Money and votes, but especially money, channelled through sophisticated and coordinated networks that can ”bundle” small donations into million dollar chunks are what buy influence on policy. Currently, advocates of Palestinian rights are very far from having such networks at their disposal. Unless they go out and do the hard work to build them, or to support meaningful campaign finance reform, whispering in the ears of politicians will have little impact. (For what it’s worth, I did my part. I recently met with Obama’s legislative aide, and wrote to Obama urging a more balanced policy towards Palestine.)

If disappointing, given his historically close relations to Palestinian-Americans, Obama’s about-face is not surprising. He is merely doing what he thinks is necessary to get elected and he will continue doing it as long as it keeps him in power. Palestinian-Americans are in the same position as civil libertarians who watched with dismay as Obama voted to reauthorize the USA Patriot Act, or immigrant rights advocates who were horrified as he voted in favor of a Republican bill to authorize the construction of a 700-mile fence on the border with Mexico.

Only if enough people know what Obama and his competitors stand for, and organize to compel them to pay attention to their concerns can there be any hope of altering the disastrous course of US policy in the Middle East. It is at best a very long-term project that cannot substitute for support for the growing campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions needed to hold Israel accountable for its escalating violence and solidifying apartheid.

Responding to criticism by Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen, Barack Obama declared his strong opposition to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan:

I decry racism and anti-Semitism in every form and strongly condemn the anti-Semitic statements made by Minister Farrakhan.
Obama also went on to condemn his Church’s award to Farrakhan and his minister’s tight relationship with him.

But a former Obama insider says that Obama’s sudden aversion to NOI and Farrakhan is belied by the fact that Obama employed and continues to employ several Farrakhan acolytes in high positions on his Illinois and U.S. Senate campaign and office staffs. I have verified that this person–who agreed to talk on the condition of anonymity–held a key position in the Obama campaign. The insider was so close to Senator Obama that they frequently personally discussed and exchanged direct e-mail messages on campaign and policy matters. This person is not connected with the Clintons and is not a disgruntled employee.

The insider says he frequently objected to Mr. Obama’s placement of Cynthia K. Miller, a member of the Nation of Islam, as the Treasurer of his U.S. Senate campaign. When I contacted Miller, now a Chicago real estate agent, to verify whether she was a member of the Nation of Islam and whether she shared Louis Farrakhan’s bigoted views about Jews, she responded, ”None of your business! Where are you going with this?” She said her resignation as Obama’s treasurer had nothing to do with her Nation of Islam ties. Then, she hung up.

The Obama insider says he also objected to Obama’s involvement with Jennifer Mason, whom he says is also a member of the Nation of Islam. Mason is Obama’s Director of Constituent Services in his U.S. Senate office and is also in charge of selecting Obama’s Senate interns. She did not respond to repeated calls for comment.

But it’s not just that he employed these individuals in positions of power in his office, it’s that when the former associate raised objections, he says Mr. Obama’s position was that he saw nothing wrong with the Nation of Islam and didn’t think it was a problem. If true–and the fact that Ms. Mason still holds her prominent Obama Senate staff position bears that out–Obama’s condemnation of Farrakhan, this month, is phony.

But the insider says there is more to it than that. Obama’s Illinois State Senate district consisted of prime Nation of Islam territory, including Hyde Park, home to Farrakhan’s mansion. It is not possible, Illinois politicos say, to win that district without the blessing of the NOI leader. NOI members, including consultant Shakir Muhammad, held important roles in the Obama state senate campaign.

How many Nation of Islam members will work in an Obama White House?

Then, there is the issue of Israel. When Obama first ran for the U.S. Senate, he gave militant responses to the Chicago Jewish News about Israel. Obama denounced Israel’s fence–which he called a ”wall” and ”barrier to peace”–to keep out terrorists and favored working with Yasser Arafat. When members of the Chicago Jewish community circulated his responses, Obama said that the answers were not his positions, but the work of a low-level intern. He submitted new answers. But that was a lie, the insider says. In fact, they were the work of Obama’s Policy Director, Audra Wilson. Moreover, Obama told the insider that he blamed the Mideast conflict on the Jews:

Barack told me that he felt that Jewish community was too inflexible, and that was why the situation in the Mideast could not be resolved.
This is the man who says in a new campaign ad that Hillary Clinton will say anything but change nothing. Barack Obama will say anything, but change his answers.

Palestinian activist and Islamist Ali Abunimah, who was a close friend of Obama’s, attended an Arab fundraiser at which the late Edward Said–plagiarist, fabricator, and prominent PLO/Arafat advisor–was the keynote speaker, and at which the Obamas were notably in attendance. Pictures on Abunimah’s site, posted above, show Obama and wife, Michelle, sitting next to Said and engaging in conversation. Abunimah, in a must-read article, says the Senator has since ”changed” his proclaimed views from those he expressed privately, in order to get Jewish donors and votes.

And he has succeeded in spades. Lee Rosenberg a top Illinois official of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the pro-Israel lobby is a big Obama donor. Ditto for former national AIPAC official Bob Asher. And Penny Pritzker of the pro-Israel family that owns Hyatt hotels. And there are so many others who have bought in to Obama’s newly pro-Israel views. The insider says Obama pulled the wool over their eyes.

Then, there’s Bettylu Saltzman, also Jewish and one of Obama’s first major supporters and donors. She is a major Peace Now devotee, officer of the far-left, pro-capitulation New Israel Fund, and wrote a letter to a Chicago newspaper praising Jimmy Carter’s book calling Israel an apartheid state. The Obama insider says she has Obama’s ear on the Mideast and ”will be a major policy person for Barack. Very dangerous.”

The insider points to Mr. Obama’s changing views in Iraq as another area of uncertainty. He has highlighted his opposition to the War in Iraq. The insider says there is strong speculation that Obama attempted to get his crony, Federal Indictee Tony Rezko, a contract to build a nuclear power plant in the new Iraq. Rezko, a Syrian Arab who helped Obama in a deal to purchase his home, was in a partnership with NOI founder Elijah Muhammad’s son, Jabir.

Barack Obama can denounce Louis Farrakhan ad infinitum. But with supporters like Ms. Saltzman, high-level staffers who are Nation of Islam members, and constantly morphing views on Israel merely for donor appeal, a Barack Obama White House bodes poorly both for Israel and–far more important–for America.

Hi John,

Sighs!

You have abused this privilege, don’t you think? Two long old news stories, and still no confirmation of an old brother. I think you can stop now.

When you get the correct source, just paste the link. Or paraphrase.

Unfounded stories will not stop him, methinks.
